Random Notes on Croatia…

I don’t think pecans exist in Croatia. Ditto, macadamia nuts and brazil nuts. Have not seen a child daycare center in Istria yet, or a storage facility (people just live with less) or a laundromat. For some reason, in the former Yugoslavia, water heaters were mounted in a bathroom, either hanging above the toilet (weird) or in the corner of your shower (huh?),  completely restricting freedom of movement when bathing. I really drove Zeljko crazy  by eliminating a small guest bathroom he had planned in my house, and turning it into a...

I’ll Celebrate Anything

Last night in Fazana we celebrated the Sardella Festival. Fifteen vendors set up tents, tables, and chairs on the street, fired up huge grills and filled refrigerators with beer. They worked all day till the wee hours of the morning, feeding thousands of hungry sardine lovers. You can’t imagine how tasty a dozen of those finger-sized fish are, grilled and drizzled with a parsley-garlic-olive oil pesto and served on a paper plate with a hunk of bread. Four bands played as loud as their amps allowed, but the main act set up on the piazza...

Finally Free!

You know that great feeling when you’ve finally crossed the last hurdle, rang the bell and won the race? I feel that way about the new cd. There was so much to it: conceptualizing, creating, recording, editing, listening, honing, mixing, judging, mastering, website designing, uploading, etc.  But the cool thing is that I could make the final decisions about it from Europe while the technical team was back in the USA.  Living abroad makes me feel much more like a citizen of the world. A few weeks ago for instance, I took these...

All’s Well That Cleans Well

i’m one of those neurotic Virgo moon types who has to have everything clean–a little messy is ok–but still clean. so i woke up at 8am this morning, and instead of my usual trip to the yoga mat/then boil water for tea/computer ritual, i looked around the bedroom and started cleaning and reorganizing everything in it. fussy as i am about not walking through dust bunnies and hair strands (my mother always knows when i’m home for a visit) i’ve never done that first thing in the morning before, and i had no idea where...

CD Release and Other Impossible Things

CD Release and Other Impossible Things

I was walking around a Croatian spring festival when I spotted this display of rusty old tools for sale, and thought, “Who actually buys this stuff?” Then I got a little closer and realized everything was made out of CHOCOLATE rolled in cocoa powder! So I bought a tiny hammer and it was so tasty I ate a putty knife too. How often do we walk around seeing  illusion as reality, when the truth is so far removed from it? I know y’all are wondering what that has to do with the previously announced cd release? Truth is, I’ve...
